Kinnick Stadium is considered one of the most-intimidating environments in college football, but Caitlin Clark and Iowa women’s basketball took it over on Sunday. It made for incredible scenes as the Hawkeyes set the record for the highest-attended women’s basketball game in history.
The record was previously set at 29,619.
Over 50,000 showed up to Kinnick!Iowa welcomed DePaul to town for the scrimmage, on the heels of a national championship appearance last season. There is a lot of pressure on Clark to bring the Hawkeyes back to the promised land, and to topple the mighty LSU Tigers— who are expected to make another run to the title game.
To set the scene, a court was placed in the far end zone, much like how Nebraska set it up for their historic volleyball match over the summer. It was uniquely beautiful.
The goal posts were not far from the hoop!

Things got underway with a stadium walk, much like the football team does before home games on Saturdays.
After getting into the locker room and getting dressed, it was time to take the court. They did ‘Back in Black’ just like the football team.

From there, it was time to get the scrimmage started. Kinnick Stadium went absolutely bonkers as Caitlin Clark was introduced, as could be expected.

They went even crazier when she scored her first-ever points inside of a football stadium and the first-ever points scored inside of Kinnick Stadium.

To make the afternoon even more incredible, Iowa continued its famed ‘Hawkeye Wave’ tradition. Fans and players on both teams turned toward the nearby children’s hospital and waved to the patients inside, who waved right back.
AND — every single dollar made by Iowa on Sunday was donated to the hospital. Every single one!
It was a total goosebumps moment!

Everything about the Iowa women’s basketball scrimmage inside of Kinnick Stadium was special.
However, it was rather chilly. The temperature hung around 54 degrees at tip off and players were blowing on their hands before free throws.
Fortunately, the Hawkeyes were able to use the football team’s heated benches. A very nice touch!
