It wasn’t that long ago where it seemed like a large majority of college football stars were in school for three, four, and rarely five years. Those days are long gone, especially after the free year of eligibility the NCAA gave out during the COVID pandemic in 2020 and the increased ease of getting a medical redshirt.
One of the biggest beneficiaries of these changes is star Utah quarterback Cam Rising. Rising, who initially started his career at Texas before transferring to Utah, is entering his 7th season of college football next year in Salt Lake City.
That’s great news for Ute fans, because Cam Rising is excellent. He’s 18-7 as a starter for Utah, including a great 2022 where he helped the Utes win the PAC-12.
Rising originally enrolled in Texas in 2018, and redshirted that year. Then, he transferred to Utah, and at the time that meant you had to sit that year out if you were an undergrad.
2020 was a free year of eligibility, and he played in 2021 and 2022. But, a torn ACL suffered in the 2023 Rose Bowl Game against Penn State kept him out for all of last season. He got a medical redshirt to come back for a seventh and final year.
But, according to new rules due to a court settlement Thursday which would give back a year of eligibility to players who transferred prior to the one-year sit-out period being waived, Rising could be eligible for an eighth season!
Interesting part of the settlement. Athletes who had to sit out a year under the old transfer rules and are still in college will get that year of eligibility restored and could come back next year.

Who knows if Cam Rising will want his potential eighth year in college. But, I’m sure he’d be welcomed for an eighth year by Utah fans.
Utah, considered a favorite in their first year in the Big 12, open up their season on August 29 against Southern Utah.
