The UCONN Huskies baseball team is headed to a Super Regional for the second time in three seasons, gearing up for a trip to Tallahassee where they’ll face No. 8 national seed Florida State.
Graduate transfer Luke Broadhurst is a big reason why as he racked up four hits and five RBIs in the opening round of NCAA Tournament play.
That production at the plate has helped put a spotlight on his incredible college baseball journey.Broadhurst’s path mirrors that of national championship winning QB Stetson Bennett.
After initially enrolling at UCONN, he left the program only to return a short time later and lead his team to postseason success. A member of the 2017 recruiting class, he signed with the Huskies and spent the first three semesters of his NCAA career in Storrs.
Then, an injury threw a wrench in his Division I plans.
Head coach Jim Penders reportedly suggested that the infielder move onto a lower level of competition following a shoulder injury in his redshirt freshman season.
Broadhurst then transferred to DIII Eastern Connecticut State, where he thrived.
Another @UConnBSB D-III story:
Luke Broadhurst spent 1.5 yrs at UConn 17-18, RS re shoulder surgery. Jim Penders suggested he would do better elsewhere.
Eastern Connecticut St 19-22, put up 1200+ OPS 2x, won nat’l title. Penders asked him back! 2-yr standout, 5 RBI in regional.

Not only did the slugger perform well on an individual level, hitting .377 across three-plus seasons, but he also led his team to a national championship.
He hit .406 while posting career highs in home runs (13) and RBIs (50) in 2022, forcing his former head coach to give him another look. Jim Penders begged to have him back!
That return has paid dividends for both the Huskies and Broadhurst.
Given his redshirt season, as well as the COVID campaign, he had two years of eligibility remaining after rejoining his original squad.
Last year, the righty hit .312 with 14 homers to earn Second Team All-Conference honors. He’s followed it up with a .288 output at the dish this season with a team-high 57 RBIs – and he’s saved his best for last!

Against the odds, the Huskies took down more highly rated foes Duke and Oklahoma in in their respective Regional field to arise triumphant as the three-seed.
Broadhurst was a big reason why!
He earned
While most kids his age have successfully integrated into the workforce, Broadhurst simply refuses! That’s been great news for both the 25-year-old and his new (and old) squad as it looks to become the first Husky team to make the College World Series field since 1979.
Thing I like: UConn’s three-hole hitter, Luke Broadhurst, is two days older than Juan Soto.
Dude technically started his college career in the fall of 2018 and he’s still going. Play until they say you can’t.

To do so, they’ll have to get through FSU on the road in a three-game set.
