After a long career as the head coach of the New Orleans Saints, Sean Payton has spent this season as a broadcaster.

Many football fans aren’t expecting that to be the case again next season.

Payton is widely expected to return to coaching next season and he has already been linked with a few potential job openings.

Today, Payton talked to The Spun and revealed a big factor in where he would coach next if he returns. Leadership in the front office is a big deal for him.

I think the most important thing is functional leadership. True ownership in the front office with the willingness to want to win and understand how to do that. I don’t want to be somewhere looking back at it, saying, ‘Man.’ I know how good it was in New Orleans, and I know Mickey Loomis well as a friend and as general manager. And I know Mrs. Benson, their ownership group there. There’s a reason we had success year in and year out. So I don’t want to feel like handcuffed somewhere you can’t win – and there are a few of those places.

And so other than that, I really kind of remove myself from looking at each individual place. I’m aware of some places, and other places, maybe not as familiar.

This could mean that the Arizona Cardinals aren’t actually a candidate to land Payton for next season.

If there’s any major problem for the Arizona Cardinals it is their front office’s leadership. They hired Kliff Kingsbury despite his losing record in college. They signed their GM to an extension because of one year of success after 5 years of mediocrity. They signed Kliff Kingsbury to a huge extension on the strength of his one successful season.

They put that ridiculous study clause in Kyler Murray’s extension.

If Sean Payton is looking for leadership from a front office, then he’ll probably looking somewhere other than Glendale for his next team.
