To be perfectly honest, if I were one of the people in this video I don’t know that I’d go sprinting after the “kidnapped” kid and his abductor either. I’d like to THINK I would, but really…would I? Would you? The bystander effect isn’t just another vocabulary term they make you learn in health class; it’s a real thing:
But the fact that no one, I repeat, NO ONE even took a few extra steps to try and help this kid? That’s messed up. I’d like to think that this is a cultural thing over in China and that here in the U.S. someone would at least dial 911, but I don’t know. Maybe we need the same “experiment” done stateside, just to see if we’re cut from the same apathetic cloth as the people in this video are.
