Over the past week or so, the hockey world has been whipped into a frenzy concerning the unspecified issue that led to the Blackhawks parting ways with Corey Perry. It took longer than it probably should have, but we finally have some insight into what led to his release.
Last week, the Chicago Blackhawks announced Corey Perry would be taking a temporary leave of absence for unspecified reasons, but things took an interesting turn after the franchise claimed it was a management decision while the veteran winger’s agent asserted the player determined he needed to step away from the team.

On Tuesday, Perry was officially waived by the team, and Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson held a press conference to firmly debunk that “disgusting” rumor while asserting the forward was kicked to the curb for “unacceptable” conduct, adding it was a “workplace matter” that was not criminal in nature.
That still didn’t really address the root cause, but according to The Daily Faceoff, Perry’s release can allegedly be traced back to a drunken incident that unfolded at some point in the past couple of weeks:
According to sources, an alcohol-fueled incident involving Perry was alleged to have occurred during an event that included corporate partners and team employees in attendance. It remains unclear what allegedly took place, who witnessed it, and who reported it to the team.
If those details have surfaced, it’s likely only a matter of time until we’re treated to more specifics.
While it’s easy to understand why the Blackhawks declined to be entirely transparent about the matter, this seems like the kind of situation where anonymous leaks to the media could’ve come in handy in order to quell the baseless speculation that could’ve been avoided.
