Los Angeles Lakers superstar Anthony Davis is one of the best defensive players in the NBA.
But he’s yet to be named the best defensive player in the NBA.
Now the big man claims that the league has organized an agenda against him in the Defensive Player of the Year voting.
“I’ll never get it,” Davis told ESPN when asked about the award.
“They’re not giving it to me. The league doesn’t like me. I’m the best defensive player in the league. I can switch 1 through 5, I can guard the pick-and-roll the best in the league, from a big standpoint, I block shots, I rebound.“I don’t know what else to do. I’m over it. I’m just going to do what I got to do to help the team win and try to play for a championship. Accolades and individual awards, I’m done with those.”
It does not sound like he is over it.
Anthony Davis Trails Rudy Gobert In Key NBA Defensive Metrics
Davis is, unquestionably, one of the league’s elite defenders.
He does everything that he claims above.
And for that, he’s been named for four All-Defense teams in his career (with a fifth coming).
But it’s hard to argue he deserves to win Defensive Player of the Year. At least, not this season.
Three-time DPOY Rudy Gobert joins Victor Wembanyama and Bam Adebayo as finalists.
Gobert is the favorite for the award, and it’s easy to see why.
He helped lead the Minnesota Timberwolves to the third-best record in the Western Conference. Gobert also led the league in defensive win shares and defensive rating according to Basketball Reference.
The polarizing Frenchman has, almost without question, been the league’s best defensive player this season.
Should Davis have been a finalist? Probably.
But he wasn’t going to win the award either way.
