The University Of Chattanooga’s Mockingbird Mascot Is Absolutely Massive

The University of Chattanooga has had quite a few mascots throughout the years. Their most recent, Scrappy Moc, is absolutely massive based on the school’s logo.

Chattanooga was formerly the ‘Moccasins,’ named after a nearby archeology site. Since then, several identities have been associated with the school.

First, a water moccasin mascot was used in the 1920s. Then, a Native American mascot, ‘Chief Moccanooga’ was used until 1996. For some time in between, a moccasin shoe was used for the mascot in the 1980s.

Ultimately, because of political concerns, the school decided to drop any Native American imagery. In turn, Chattanooga shortened the ‘Moccasin’ nickname was shortened to the ‘Mocs’ and the state bird, a mockingbird, was selected as the mascot.

Today, the school uses Scrappy Moc, a jacked mockingbird, as its in-person mascot for sporting events. However, as UTC gears up to play Illinois in the first round of the NCAA Tournament,

how big the mascot is according to the school logo.

Based on the logo from 2001-2007, in which a mockingbird is seen driving a coal-powered train, the bird is about 12 feet tall. The math is based entirely on estimation, but it checks out.

Here is the Chattanooga Mocs logo in question:

And here is the bird:

Now, the Mockingbird is about 2/3 the size of a coal-powered train. Most coal-powered trains are about 13-16 feet tall.

That means that the bird in the logo with the train, is about nine feet tall from the waist-down. When the legs are factored into the equation, the mockingbird stands about 12 feet tall.

Now, again, this is an estimate. It isn’t a perfect science.

But no matter how you look at it, the Chattanooga Mockingbird stands more than eight feet tall based on the logo. That is both awesome and absolutely terrifying.

Since 2007, UTC changed its logo to a much more simple, and significantly more lame C for Chattanooga. Take a look:

It isn’t entirely clear as to why the school moved away from the Mockingbird driving a train, which is objectively awesome, but Scrappy Moc — the 12-foot bird — lives on.
