Legendary NBA coach Stan Van Gundy received a valuable vocabulary lesson from none other than Brooklyn’s Kevin Durant.
The former Miami, Orlando, Detroit, and New Orleans head coach dropped a hot take about injuries. The overarching theme of Stan Van Gundy’s hot take is 90s NBA teams had less medical staff, they played and practiced more, but somehow injuries are up more now and it doesn’t make sense.
Kevin Durant swooped into Van Gundy’s mentions to agree with Stan but this was lost on the former head coach. That’s because Van Gundy did not understand the meaning of ‘spittin’ as slang.
Here’s the exchange between Kevin Durant and SVG with a good samaritan dropping ‘spittin’ knowledge on Stan:
Initially, SVG thought he’d offended Kevin Durant and took ‘spittin’ to mean something negative. He clarified that he was saying there’s something fundamentally wrong with how NBA players are trained and prepared these days. It is at that point that someone clarified what ‘spittin’ means, the phrase used by KD.
Urban Dictionary defines ‘spittin’ as “the act of or urge to freestyle or rap.” It also defines it as “to rap” and/or “to shoot.” There is also this definition of “to proposition a female for the purpose of getting her phone number. Usualy to begin some form of courtship.”
Stan Van Gundy’s comments were near and dear to Kevin Durant at the moment. KD is currently sidelined with an MCL injury. He is not expected to rejoin his team until February at the earliest.
Elsewhere in the exchange, SVG doubled down on his assertion that medical staffs should be doing more:
Sorry. Not buying it John. Game is definitely faster, but less physical. What has really changed is the value system. If these “performance” and medical staffs are so necessary guys shouldn’t be missing this many games.

Players are capable of more too, in his mind:
You are assuming they can’t do both — play every night AND be ready for the playoffs.

Could this explain the rise in NBA injuries? Perhaps:
I have had many physical therapists and orthopedists suggest the same thing. Kids specialize too soon and use the same muscle groups etc. over and over and over.
