On Monday, we learned that Episode VIII‘s title is Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Who better to ask about the upcoming sci-fi blockbuster than none other than Luke Skywalker himself. Mark Hamill sat down with the Associated Press and gave his thoughts on the intriguing title.
“It’s got a real samurai [vibe],” Hamill said of the upcoming Star Wars flick. “It’s straightforward and minimalist, and I like that.
”Star Wars creator George Lucas has frequently noted that the samurai culture was an inspiration for Jedis.
Hamill revealed that he learned of the title a long. long time ago, but was pretty nervous about being trusted with such high-level intel.
“They have us so jacked up with paranoia over leaks, but that’s the way of the world,” the actor told the AP. “It’s funny, ’cause back when we were making the original, nobody cared.”
But the real question is: Who is the last Jedi in Episode VIII? Here are some theories.
1. Luke Skywalker
This is the most obvious answer. It is the most literal interpretation since Luke Skywalker could very well be the last Jedi in the Star Wars universe. In The Force Awakens, Luke Skywalker is referred to as “the last Jedi” in the opening title crawl.
2. Rey
In The Force Awakens, Rey showed that she has some powers from the Force. And maybe Luke will train Rey in the ways of the Force and she will be the last Jedi.
Another possibility is that Rey is like the protagonists from the previous two trilogies. Rey, like Anakin, and Luke, grew up on a desolate sand planet. And like Luke, Rey wants to find out more about her long-lost parents. Could her dad be Luke? Making her the last Jedi in the family line?
