POV Video Captures Headbutt And Helmet Slap As Things Get Chippy During High-Stakes UFL Game

Saturday’s UFL game between the Birmingham Stallions and Michigan Panthers had major implications in the USFL division of the newly-merged league. As a result, things got chippy in a hurry!

POV video from the referee captured two separate spats during the first quarter that somehow resulted in only one flag.

The first incident went down in the trenches. Panthers defensive end Mika Tafua and Stallions offensive lineman Derwin Gray were chirping at each other after a physical run went for a short gain. They both came up from the play and started yapping.

Tafua is 6-foot-3, 249 pounds. Gray is 6-foot-4, 320 pounds.

Had things escalated any further, it would have been ugly!

Fortunately, Michigan linebacker Breland Speaks and the official was there to break it up. Just not before Gray leaned forward to smack helmets with Tafua. The headbutt rightfully drew a flag.

To see the episode go down in real-time from the perspective of an on-field official is pretty cool. There are a lot of things that the NFL could learn from the UFL and the on-body referee cams is definitely something that should be implemented on the highest level of pro football.

The second video is even cooler!

Shortly after Gray was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct, another kerfuffle proceeded to unfold. POV video from the referee’s perspective was even cooler the second time!

He ran in to break up a skirmish between Panthers running back Matthew Colburn and Stallions nose tackle Carlos Davis. It seemed as though the latter was trying to take the ball from the former.

Either way, Colburn got up and pushed Davis off of him with a two-hand smack to the face.

Even though Birmingham might have initiated the scuffle, it is hard to say that Michigan did not deserve to be flagged. Colburn’s helmet slap was on the same level as Gray’s headbutt…

Despite the lack of call, it was yet another example of how to change football from a viewership perspective. UFL fans at home being able to get up in the action like that is pretty cool!
