The Brooklyn Nets travelled to Boston over the weekend to meet up with the Celtics in an Eastern Conference showdown.

The matchup was highly anticipated for both fanbases as we got to see the return of both Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. KD is getting back from a leg injury while Irving can only play in select games due to COVID mandates that differ from state to state. He’s yet to play a game in the state of New York.

The trip to Boston could be considered a bit of a homecoming for Irving, who played two seasons with the Celtics before joining the Nets.

The homecoming return was anything but happy, though.

Not only did the Nets lose to fall below .500 on the year, but Irving was taunted throughout the contest.

For those that may have forgotten, Irving didn’t exactly leave the franchise on the best terms.

While he was a two-time All Star with the Celtics, many questioned his desire to be with the organization particularly in a playoff series loss to the Bucks in his final season.

In that series, Irving shot just 35% from the field, tallying two games where he scored 15 points or less. The Celtics lost the last four games to the Bucks and were eliminated from the playoff field.

And Irving was quick to find his way out of Boston. Celtics fans believe he gave up on the team, and those feelings of rejection have yet to leave.

Celtics Fans Berate Irving With Insults

Throughout the game, Irving was battered by insults and remarks from the opposing crowd. It started with the introductions, where he was loudly booed.

He received the attention of the Boston crowd any time he touched the basketball.

It culminated with “Kyrie Sucks” chants in the final minute of play.

The feeling is mutual as Irving stomped on the Boston logo the last time he played in TD Garden. Fans didn’t forget

After the game was over, Irving took to the podium to address the anger received from the Celtic faithful.

Irving hilariously compares the fans to a “scorned girlfriend,” saying that they want an explanation on why he left but are still waiting on that text back.

This should only add fuel to the fire in the resentment between the two sides. Hopefully, there will be a little NBA Playoff action between the two in the near future because we’d all love to see the reaction with the season on the line.
