The Worst Team In College Basketball Winning A Game With Six Players Is So Demoralizing For The Losers

Indiana University—Purdue University Indianapolis is the worst team in college basketball. However, by transitive property, there may be a new team to hold that title.

IUPUI, a public, collaborative university between Indiana University and Purdue University, has not had success on the hardwood in 2021. Entering Thursday night’s game, the men’s basketball team had won two games.

The first win came against Division-III school Spalding University, a private Roman Catholic school with an total undergraduate enrollment of 1,305. They also won a game against USCAA independent East/West University. That was it.

In fact, things got so bad, that the Jaguars held open tryouts for all students who qualified. Basically, anyone with a pulse who can dribble had an opportunity to join the men’s basketball program for the remainder of the 2021/22 season.

That was on February 7th, after a 17-point loss to 6-17 Robert Morris. Since then, IUPUI had lost by 15 to Fort Wayne, by 38 to Cleveland State and by three to the University of Illinois Chicago.

Despite the consistent, demoralizing losses, the Jaguars did not give up.

On Thursday night, IUPUI traveled to Robert Morris for a rematch. After arriving in Pittsburgh, the Jaguars went on to beat the Colonials by 10 and won their first game against a Division-I opponent all year.

To say that it was impressive for IUPUI is an understatement. To say that it was truly embarrassing for Robert Morris is also an understatement.

The box score is crazy.

IUPUI, with much of their team dealing with injury, illness or opt-outs, played only six players the entire game. That was also the case in their last three games.

Thus, six guys who had played three games in the last seven days by themselves played their fourth game in a week and won. The Jaguars were led by a game-high 18 points from two of their six players and only one other player reached double digits.

Freshman Boston Stanton III played the least amount of minutes with 24, freshman Chuks Isitua played 27 and sophomore Bakari LaStrap played 31. Other than those three, junior Mike DePersia was the only other player who didn’t play all 40 minutes and he played 38 of the 40.

Junior Nathan McClure and senior B.J. Maxwell did not come out of the game and IUPUI still managed to pull out a 10-point win. To make things even crazier, the entire team had only 12 assists— which means that 66 points were scored with only 12 of the 23 field goals made had a pass attached.

It is a great morning to be a Jaguar, and a terrible morning to be a Colonial. Back to the drawing board for Robert Morris.
