High Schooler Drew Griffith Destroys US Record Mile Time At Pennsylvania State Meet

Chances are you’ve never heard the name Drew Griffith before.

But you might want to learn the name.

Griffith, a Notre Dame commit, is a high school runner who won the Foot Locker Nationals cross country championship in December. But on Friday, he took his legacy to a whole new level when he broke the nearly quarter-century-old NFHS record in the mile with a mind-boggling time of 3:57.08.

The previous record, set by Alan Webb of Virginia in 2001, was 3:59.51. This means Griffith didn’t just beat the record, he absolutely destroyed it by over two seconds.

“It’s always just the goal to win at the state meet but I definitely had that number on my mind,” Griffith

Chris Harlan of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Griffith also set the record for two-mile New Balance Nationals Indoor in March with an eye-popping time of 8:34.91. The previous record was held by Edward Cheserek’s at 8:39.15 and was set 2013.

So it’s safe to say Drew Griffith has just never been tired in his life.

How good is Griffith? He doesn’t even focus on high school competition.

“I feel like the WPIAL and PIAA meets are more just to have fun,” Griffith said in a recent interview. “Fast times are cool, but at the end of the day, you just go out there to go for the win. But I think [records] are definitely possible. I’m somebody who doesn’t like to cross ideas off too early, so I think anything is possible as long as I can get to the right mindset.”

He’s not just setting records. He’s destroying them.

So yes, get to know the name Drew Griffith. Because while Paris 2024 is probably a bit too early, there’s even reason to believe he could be going for gold at the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.
