‘WandaVision’ Director Weighs In On Paul Bettany Constantly Teasing A Massive Cameo

Part of the fun of WandaVision has been the theorization, the week-to-week fan-theory-driven speculation that only arises once every so often with series like Game of Thrones or LOST. Truth be told, WandaVision and its mystery have been able to sustain the sort of conversation that I’m not sure the more traditional The Falcon and the Winter Soldier — which was originally scheduled to be the first Marvel Cinematic Universe series on Disney+ — could’ve provided.

As a result of the online culture and community that’s sprung up in the wake of WandaVision, speculation and theorization is at an all-time high as we head into Friday’s season finale, and that’s largely due to comments made by the cast themselves.

Back in February, Bettany sat down with Esquire, where he unleashed a tidbit that fans of WandaVision would spend the next couple of weeks dissecting:

“Truth is, of all of the characters we were trying to keep secret, a lot of them got out through leaks. There is one character that has not been revealed. And it is very exciting. It is an actor I’ve longed to work with all of my life. We have some amazing scenes together and I think the chemistry between us is extraordinary and fireworks on set.”

As revealed at the end of Episode 8, though, there seems to be a chance that Bettany was actually being quite cheeky and simply referencing working with himself as White Vision.

In a recent interview with The Huffington Post, director Matt Shakman was asked about Bettany’s tease and essentially left his series lead out to dry:

“I’m gonna let Paul Bettany answer that question. He dug himself this hole. He can get out of it,” director Matt Shakman told HuffPost on Monday.

When asked again if Bettany had just been joking and White Vision was the cameo, Shakman stuck to his guns: “I don’t know. We’ll have to let Paul answer that question.”

Bettany is certainly not alone in this regard, as co-star Elizabeth Olsen has also teased a massive cameo in past interviews.

If I was a betting man (which I unsuccessfully am), my money would be on Doctor Strange popping up in the finale, as the continued absence of the Sorcerer Supreme — a man whose literal job is keeping reality in check — would be a plot hole too big for a machine as well-oiled as the MCU.
