Glen Powell is on top of the world these days following recent star turns in films such as Top Gun: Maverick, Devotion, and the Sydney Sweeney-starring romantic comedy Anyone But You, which was released in December 2023.
Anyone But You was one of the most successful rom-coms in years as it grossed almost $220 million against a $25 million budget and will likely spawn a sequel.
Powell and Sweeney have also both publicly stated that they’re looking for additional projects to make together.Part of the reason that Anyone But You was such a hit was because of the natural marketing machine it became due to rumors of an affair between the two stars (while Powell actually was going through a breakup with ex-girlfriend Gigi Paris at the time, Sweeney remains engaged to Jonathan Davino — Google him, I dare you).
Speaking to British GQ, Powell put all of the credit at Sweeney’s doorstep and he said she used the media in order to promote the movie and make it more popular than it likely would have been, and compared her to Batman in the process.
“At the time, [the rumors] were like, whoa, whoa, whoa, time out! I was going through a real breakup at the time. It was stressful,” Powell told British GQ in a recent profile interview.
“She’s a businesswoman, and she understands that who she is in the public eye and who she is in reality are two separate people,” he continued. “It’s Bruce Wayne and Batman. You can shoot Batman as many times as you want, it’s not gonna affect Bruce Wayne.”
“That insane circus around it took a normal romcom and made it IP. It was the electricity that kept that movie going [at the box office]. And we made the hell out of that movie. I’m really proud of it.”
Powell is on the verge of becoming a household name, if he already isn’t one, as his upcoming combination of Hit Man (hitting Netflix on June 7, directed by School of Rock‘s Richard Linklater) and Twisters looks set to solidify Powell as both a capable leading man actor and a blockbuster-selling movie star.
Twisters is particularly interesting, as its throwback adventure thrills could prove to be the Top Gun: Maverick-esque hit of 2024 if the reviews are positive. The trailers certainly make it look as though it has the potential to be the movie event of the summer (other than Deadpool & Wolverine, which could be the next $1 billion movie).
