Three months ago, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith went viral for absolutely crushing the drum part to a Thirty Seconds to Mars song he’d never heard before.
Now it’s Dirk Verbeuren of Megadeath who is stealing the show by doing the exact same thing with Paramore‘s hit song, “Misery Business.”
Verbeuren appeared on Drumeo’s YouTube channel.
In the ongoing series, they challenge drummers to listen to a song for the first time with the drum part removed. They then ask the drummer to take their best stab at what they think the drum part sounds like.Later, they played the drummer the entirety of the song including the drum part so that they can compare the two parts.
It makes for fantastic content and shows just how obscenely talented these drummers are.
Verbeuren appeared on the same series a year ago and played “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers. That drum part was great. This one, however, is incredible.
And that’s no shade to The Killers, who have I seen live multiple times. But I am also a Paramore (and Hayley Williams in general) lover at heart, and Verbeuren absolutely nailed perhaps the band’s biggest single.
I mean, Paramore is a long way from Megadeath and yet Verbeuren seemingly nails all the tempo changes and did more than okay by Paramore drummer Zac Farro (who is seriously underrated).
“It’s almost unbelievable that he didn’t know the song, because he played it 90% correctly, didn’t miss the stops or anything,” one YouTube commenter stated.
So, how did Verbeuren assess his performance?
“Every time you play, you sit down and you play stuff, you know you try to think ‘Well, if this was recorded would I be okay with?’ It pushes you just to get to that next level,” he began. “…You play with the intention as if this was the last chance to play.”
That’s a lesson we could probably all take away in all fields. If you leave it all out there, you’ll walk away with no regrets.
