The battle for the Kansas City Chiefs between the states of Missouri and Kansas is starting to heat up following last month’s stadium renovation vote failure.
Following the failed vote, Marny Sherman, the wife of Kansas City Royals owner John Sherman, claimed their Major League Baseball team and the NFL’s Chiefs were done with Kansas City, Missouri.
Now, Kansas City mayor Quinton Lucas has found himself battling to keep the Chiefs in Missouri as both Dallas mayor Eric Johnson as well as lawmakers in the state of Kansas have been quite vocal about wanting the football team to move to their location.
The latest salvo to be fired in this border war was fired this week when the Kansas legislature was presented with renderings of what a new domed stadium for the Chiefs could look like.
The new stadium would be located near the Kansas City Monarchs’ Legends Field, Hollywood Casino and Kansas Speedway in Wyandotte County.

The architect behind the conceptual stadium renderings, David Manica, helped design NRG Stadium for the Houston Texans, as well as Allegiant Stadium, home of the Las Vegas Raiders, and the new stadium under construction in Nashville for the Tennessee Titans.
“This location offers incredible access to everybody,” Manica told Fox 4 News, regarding the new Chiefs stadium design. “And the total available parking area will provide an unbelievable tailgating experience that is supplemented by a fantastic mixed-use development.”
According to an ESPN report published on Wednesday, a bill was presented on Tuesday by the Kansas legislature that would have allowed Kansas officials to authorize at least $1 billion in bonds to cover the entire cost building new stadiums for both the Chiefs as well as the Royals.
The debt would supposedly be be paid off with tax revenues generated in the area over a 30 year time period.
Lawmakers were divided over whether the bill would merely be “corporate welfare” or be a financial boon to the area with new taxes being generated in the area, plus athletes having to pay income tax to the state.
A similar type of bond was issued to help finance the Kansas Speedway, which opened in 2001 and has hosted NASCAR, IndyCar and IMSA events. The track, which has seen its seating capacity cut down from a high of 82,000 to 48,000 today, was purchased by NASCAR in 2019.
“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take,” Kansas House Commerce Committee Chair Sean Tarwater said about trying to lure the Chiefs to the Kansas side. “We need them to stay in the metroplex.”
