LeBron James was heard praising former teammate Kyrie Irving this week with the guard gearing up for an NBA Finals appearance with the Dallas Mavericks. In the process, he made himself a part of the discussion.
Whether that was intentional, or an unintended consequence is unknown, but it’s clearly rubbed some the wrong way. LeBron is now being blasted for his comments by the NBA world.
While speaking with podcast partner JJ Redick on Tuesday, James called Irving the “most gifted player the NBA has ever seen.”
“I’m so f—ing happy and proud to watch him continue his growth and at the same time, I’m so f—ing mad that I’m not his running mate anymore.”
Normally, that praise would be welcomed. In this case, it’s been criticized.
Some believe LeBron was trying to make himself a part of the NBA Finals conversation with his Lakers sitting at home for the postseason. If that was the case, it certainly worked.
The first question Kyrie Irving was asked on Wednesday dealt with those podcast remarks, and he was visibly peeved by the topic.

Maybe a question about the series against a loaded Celtics squad would’ve been better? Hindsight is always 20/20…
Kyrie Irving shrugged the inquiry off and answered respectfully. Others didn’t have the same response.
Kendrick Perkins blasted LeBron James before Game 1.
While previewing that NBA Finals opener, Perk took a moment to spotlight those comments. He ripped James to shreds on live TV!
“Here we go again, [LeBron James] weaseling his way into somebody else’s moment, “he said. “This is not about you! Your team is at home.”

LeBron James has done this numerous times in the past, at least in Kendrick Perkins‘ eyes. If it was his goal to become a part of the conversation, his goal was accomplished.
Was he simply praising his former teammate or trying to steal the spotlight? You be the judge!
