Rory McIlroy’s pending divorce made headlines this week just days before his appearance at the PGA Championship at Valhalla. The golfer is separating from his wife of seven years, Erica, with paperwork being filed in Florida on Monday.
Shortly thereafter, the news went viral sparking a major reaction amongst golf fans and media. The PGA Tour even got in on the trending action (inadvertently?) by quickly posting a highlight reel from McIlroy’s 2014 season.
That ’14 campaign was his last as a single man. It was also one of his most successful.
The Irishman had been engaged to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, who’s already given her input on his latest split, but he called the marriage plans off that May. He then went on an absolute tear.
McIlroy ripped off four wins, including two majors, and seven Top 10 finishes. Nearly half of those Top 10s came as tournament runner-up.

The PGA Tour attempted to emphasize that moment, as well as others throughout that incredible season, with a post on its social media outlets. The timing was… let’s say… interesting.

Yes, McIlroy’s most recent major win came at Valhalla in the PGA Championship, the exact tournament he’s getting set to tee off in on Thursday. But followers immediately connected the dots in another way.
“Let’s do a video of the best shots from when Rory was single to hype people up.”
Who knows? The divorce filing could bode well for McIlroy as he puts the focus back on golf. It certainly didn’t have any impact on his most recent performance when he won at Quail Hollow.
Based on his dating history, his play might even improve!
