The parents of the kid who went viral for wearing face paint and a headdress at a Kansas City Chiefs game are now demanding an article retraction and threatening a lawsuit.
9-year-old Holden Armenta was accused by the website Deadspin of being racist after he was shown on CBS during the game on Nov.
26.Following all of the furor, the kid’s mom, Shannon Armenta, fired back at critics and let them know that Holden’s grandfather, Raul Armenta, is a Business Committee Member of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians.
Then his dad, Bubba Armenta, talked to Fox News host Jesse Waters about it.
“It’s, you know, worldwide. Now, there’s comments all over. There’s, you know, disrespect towards Native Americans and towards my family,” said Bubba.
Not everyone 100 percent agreed with Bubba and Shannon though. For example, Kenneth Kahn, the tribal chairman for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, had a slightly different take.
“The Santa Ynez Band Chumash Indians does not endorse wearing regalia as part of a costume or participating in any other type of cultural appropriation,” he wrote in a statement about the situation.
That, many thought, was the capper on a strange story that appeared to have to come an end.
Wrong.
Now, Holden Armenta’s parents have shared a legal letter they wrote along with their attorneys at Clare Locke LLP and sent to Deadspin with NewsNation outlining their demands.
“These Articles, posts on X, and photos about Holden and his parents must be retracted immediately,” the letter reads.
“It is not enough to quietly remove a tweet from X or disable the article from Deadspin’s website.
“You must publish your retractions and issue an apology to my clients with the same prominence and fanfare with which you defamed them.”
If Deadspin doesn’t cooperate, then Armeta’s letter threatens a possible lawsuit against the company, the author of the article Carron J. Phillips, G/O Media, and Great Hill Partners.
Story (somehow) still developing…
