The Denver Broncos started soliciting offers concerning a possible sale after longtime owner Pat Bowlen passed away in 2019, and a number of big (and some fairly surprising) names have come up in that conversation over the past couple of years.
In 2021, we learned Jeff Bezos was potentially eyeing the franchise, which seemed like a fairly natural fit for a man who could buy every single NFL team at its estimated value and still have around $90 billion to play with. We’ve also seen some comparatively unlikely candidates throw their hats into the ring, as Magic Johnson teamed up with a group of interested buyers led by 76ers owner Josh Harris and Antonio Brown did everything in his power to convince the world he and Kanye West had a legitimate shot at buying the team.
Last month, the Broncos officially set a deadline for the bids that must be submitted by 3 P.M. on June 6th. However, according to Forbes, the deal is all but done, as the outlet reports Walmart heir Rob Walton has essentially ensured he will become Denver’s new owner courtesy of a $4.5 billion offer that is expected to be officially accepted in the coming weeks.
Walton has an estimated net worth of around $60 billion, so while he didn’t really need any help, his daughter Carrie and her husband (current Walmart chairman Greg Penner) will also have an undisclosed. The offer appears to be pretty fair when you consider Forbes estimated the Broncos were worth $3.75 billion last year, and the $4.5 billion sum is poised to become the largest amount of money to ever move hands in a transaction concerning the sale of a sports team.
It’s worth noting a Denver reporter who covers the Broncos says he’s been told the team
The Broncos would have BY FAR the richest owner in the NFL with Rob Walton. https://t.co/YXNnUruZFY

There are obvious perks to having the wealthiest owner in the entire NFL
Let’s all hope that he cares about the Broncos as much as us

If this is true please take care of our Broncos like Mr Pat Bowlen did as owner https://t.co/cNaQDDGyje

This is the absolute dream scenario for the Denver Broncos. Walton will become the second richest owner in all of American professional sports, only behind Steve Ballmer. Resources to improve the team and facilities in any way will not be scarce by any means. https://t.co/ase3EZyKrf

Walton got so much money that the broncos should be well taken care of. It’d be pretty hard for one of the richest sports owners to mess up https://t.co/ScIiKgfDrh

I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
