The Celtics punched their ticket to the Eastern Conference Finals on Wednesday with a win over a Cavaliers team that had to deal with the absence of an injured Donovan Mitchell, and there was one notable name who was not thrilled with his decision to ride the bench: Ric Flair.
There weren’t many people who thought the Cleveland Cavaliers were going to be able to hang with the Boston Celtics during the second-round showdown where the latter headed into the series as overwhelming favorites to advance. The Cavs were able to get a win in Game 2, but their opponents were able to wrap up the gentlemen’s sweep on Wednesday with a 113-98 victory.
Cleveland got some pretty devastating news prior to the start of the contest after learning Donovan Mitchell would be forced to miss his second consecutive game with the calf strain he suffered at the end of Game 3.
They were also without the services of Jarrett Allen and Caris LeVert (who had replaced Mitchell in Game 4), but the absence of the shooting guard who led the team in scoring during the regular season and was doing the same in the playoffs with an average of 29.6 points per game was obviously a crippling blow.
Cleveland’s season was on the line, so it’s safe to assume Mitchell was in pretty serious pain when you consider it impacted him to the point where he decided there was no way he’d be able to play in the elimination game.
However, his inactive status did not sit well with Ric Flair, who has been a diehard fan of the Cavaliers since striking up a friendship with LeBron James during his time in Cleveland.
After learning Mitchel was inactive, The Nature Boy hopped on Twitter to tear into the guard for not playing through the pain while referencing his personal history of overcoming injuries during his professional wrestling career.
He eventually decided to delete the message, but the internet never forgets.
Damn, Ric. Tell us how you really feel.
