Olivia Dunne was in Pittsburgh for Paul Skenes’ highly-anticipated MLB debut on Saturday. She watched her boyfriend get stuck with two earned runs in bizarre fashion during a lengthy fifth inning.
It was a series of events that marred his final line over the course of more than two hours and 30 minutes.
Yes, you read that correctly. The fifth inning lasted almost three hours due to some unexpected rain!
Skenes, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, made the most hyped Major League Baseball debut since Stephen Strasburg and had himself an day. Interestingly enough, Andrew McCutchen was the Pirates’ leadoff hitter when the latter made his debut 14 years ago. He also led of for the Bucs during the former’s debut on Saturday.
Anyway, Skenes was dealing!
The 21-year-old ace, who won a national championship with LSU last June, struck out seven hitters in four innings. 17 of his 84 total pitches topped out at 100mph or greater.

However, Skenes also allowed six hits, two walks and three earned runs.
One of the the runs was a solo dinger. The other two scored after Skenes was already out of the game over the course of almost three hours.
It went like this:
- 5:24pm: Skenes was pulled from the game after allowing back-to-back hits.
- Pittsburgh leads 6-1
- 5:26pm: Relief pitcher Kyle Nicolas enters the game and records two quick outs.
- 5:28pm: A hit-by-pitch loads the bases
- 5:29pm: A four-pitch walk scores one of Skenes’ runs
- Pittsburgh leads 6-2
- 5:31pm: Another four-pitch walk scores the second of Skenes’ runs
- Pittsburgh leads 6-3
- 5:33pm: Yet another four-pitch walk scores the third of Skenes’ runs
- Pittsburgh leads 6-4
- 5:34pm: The Pirates make a pitching change
- 5:37pm: A five-pitch walk scores an additional run
- Pittsburgh leads 6-5
- 5:40pm: An infield single ties the game at 6-6
- 5:41pm: The game enters a rain delay
- 7:59pm: The Pirates make a pitching change
- 8:01pm: The game resumes
- 8:03pm: Another four-pitch walk breaks the tie
- Chicago leads 7-6
- 8:04pm: Another five-pitch walk scores another run
- Chicago leads 8-6
- 8:05pm: The Pirates record a third out
Fortunately, Pittsburgh’s offense was able to rally to win 10-9. Skenes got a gatorade bath from his teammates after the game and Dunne — who stayed all nine innings despite the delay — was extremely proud of her superstar boyfriend.

A long-suffering Pirates organization is on the come up and Paul Skenes is a big part of the future in Steel City. He was awesome during his first outing.
