Chennedy Carter’s Coach Throws Her Under The Bus After Initially Defending Caitlin Clark Cheap Shot

Chennedy Carter did everything in her power to unlock WNBA Villain Status thanks to what transpired between her and Caitlin Clark when the Chicago Sky and the Indiana Fever faced off over the weekend, and her head coach has reversed course after initially coming to her defense.

On Saturday, we were treated to The Cheap Shot Heard Around The Basketball World when the Sky faced off against the Fever in a game where Chicago guard Chennedy Carter found herself thrust into the spotlight after laying out Caitlin Clark prior to an inbound in the closing seconds of the third quarter.

The incident sparked an ongoing discourse among fans who largely fell in one of two camps: Clark supporters who called for Carter’s head while suggesting the Fever need an enforcer on their team to keep opponents in line, and those who felt the backlash was wildly overblown because the person on the receiving end of the foul was the WNBA’s new golden child.

Following the contest, Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon tried to downplay the incident while supporting Carter, saying, ‘They’re just competing.” However, it would appear the WNBA disagreed with that assessment when you consider the league upgraded the foul to a Flagrant 1 after reviewing the infraction in the wake of Chicago’s 71-70 loss on the road.

Now, Weatherspoon has also reversed course based on the statement she issued on Monday where she said “Chennedy got caught up in the heat of the moment” and acknowledged the cheap shot was “not appropriate, nor is it what we do or who we are.”

Weatherspoon’s decision to issue a public statement concerning a private conversation with Carter is a fairly curious one, as this seems like a matter that the coach could’ve handled internally without going out of her way to let the world know she’d addressed it.

We’ll get a chance to see if Carter took the message to heart when the Sky and the Fever face off again on June 16th.
