Sauce Gardner is grabbing headlines this offseason.

He was one of the top picks in the NFL Draft, going with the fourth overall selection to the New York Jets.

He’s known for his style and flash both on and off the field. Look no further than his iced-out diamond necklace worn earlier this month.

That style also carries over to his football uniform.

The cornerback wore No. 1 while at Cincinnati, and it appears he wants to do the same with his professional organization. This is a pretty common practice for players joining new teams, but there’s often one problem.

The number is already being worn by a teammate.

That was the case with New York, as fifth-year defensive back DJ Reed donned No. 1. Often, players can offer an incentive for the teammate to give the number up.

And that’s just what one Cincinnati based media outlet posted in the case of Gardner.

That’s quite a price for a jersey number. And it looks like Garnder, himself, is rebutting the rumor with a social media post of his own.

Gardner is shutting down the notion that he paid a quarter of a million dollars in order to wear No. 1 with the Jets. And he’s even more pissed that a Cincinnati based account is the one spreading the misinformation.

Garnder was originally slated to wear No. 20, but he does seem to have come to an agreement with Reed to make the switch. If it did indeed come at a $250K cost, it’s quite the price tag for a simple number change.
