New Orleans Saints Break Silence On Character Concerns Stemming From Spencer Rattler Video

Spencer Rattler Attitude Saints

Spencer Rattler is one of the most polarizing quarterback prospects in recent NFL history and it dates all of the way back to high school. Despite all of the “character concerns” that loomed over the former No. 1 overall recruit throughout his entire career, the New Orleans Saints are not concerned.

They drafted Rattler with the 150th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

While there is a legitimate possibility that he could one day take over as QB1, perhaps even sooner than late, that move is still at least a few months away. In the meantime, the 23-year-old signal-caller is getting his feet under him on the next level. Rookie Minicamp got underway on Friday!

Rattler, who was once considered a lock to be the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, ran into an unfortunate and unusual set of circumstances. Caleb Williams replaced him after some early struggles at Oklahoma in 2021. His attitude in wake of Lincoln Riley’s decision was immediately called into question, and a lot of it stemmed from a short clip from the Netflix series ‘QB1: Beyond The Lights.’

Although Rattler went on to South Carolina and dispelled the character concerns in two up-and-down seasons with the Gamecocks, that video stuck with him. He couldn’t shake it.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport claimed that the two-minute clip was part of the reason that Rattler slid into the fifth round, even though Shane Beamer called it ridiculous and went scorched earth on that narrative. Adam Schefter later pushed back on Rapoport’s report.

Regardless of whether a five-year-old+ video factored into the equation or not, the Saints aren’t worried. It was never a concern in the Big Easy.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler recently discussed New Orleans’ stance on SportsCenter.

The slide to the fifth round was unexpected. There was some stuff about the character from his high school days in a documentary that wasn’t flattering. I talked to the Saints about that with somebody there. They said they had zero problems with it.

He had clearly matured from all that, it really didn’t come up all that much in their team interviews of Rattler. So at that point in the fifth round, they just thought they were getting really good value and this could be their number two quarterback behind Derek Carr.

That settles it! The organization that drafted Spencer Rattler could not be less concerned with the supposed “character issues.” New Orleans is excited to have him on the team and took a rational approach to the evaluation process by putting football first.
