Among the major sports teams in Detroit, the Detroit Red Wings are by far the most successful. Their eleven Stanley Cup titles are the most among any American franchise in the NHL, and Detroit is often referred to as “Hockeytown”.
Contrast that to the Detroit Lions, who have never won a Super Bowl, and have just four NFL titles, all before 1960.
No one would dare call Detroit “Footballtown”.But, right now, football is all the rage in Detroit, as the Detroit Lions are one game away from the first Super Bowl trip in team history. Quarterback Jared Goff is a big reason why.
Goff was included in the trade that sent Lions legendary quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams prior to 2021 as mostly salary filler, with the expectation being the Lions would draft their franchise quarterback in the next few years after the trade.
Instead, Jared Goff has taken the job by the horns. After a solid-enough 2021 season that convinced the Lions not to use the first-overall pick to trade for a quarterback, Goff has been one of the league’s best quarterbacks the past two years. This year, he threw for 4.575 yards and 30 touchdowns against just 12 interceptions as he’s orchestrated one of the league’s best offenses.
He’s no doubt Detroit’s guy now, and Red Wings fans proved that on Thursday when they chanted his name during their 3-0 win against the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday.

If Jared Goff can win this week on the road against the San Francisco 49ers and again in a few weeks in the Super Bowl, he’s getting a statue.
