Phil Hellmuth recently sat down with Bob Menery for an interview where they discussed poker and everything else under the sun.
Early on in the interview, Phil Hellmuth tells Bob Menery how much it annoys him that ‘kids’ are getting staked in $100K buy-in tournaments and then have the audacity to complain that Phil Hellmuth and other pros aren’t in the events.
And the reality in these situations are the players, when they’re being staked by one or more backers, might only be putting up 20% of their own buy-in and own only 20% of their action. In Phil Hellmuth‘s case, he covers his own buy-ins and tells Bob Menery he doesn’t want to schlep it overseas to compete in a tournament where the players aren’t even really playing for themselves.
@Phil_Hellmuth has something to say about the poker "kids" that are staked to play tournaments!

Phil Hellmuth is the greatest tournament poker player of all-time. That’s not even up for debate. He has the hardware to back that up with 17 World Series of Poker gold bracelets which is 7 more bracelets than anyone in history (there are four players tied with 10). Hellmuth has over $17.9 million in winnings in just WSOP events alone. Sure, the ‘Poker Brat’ has an ego but he backs it up with results and he’s also no stranger to being open and vulnerable in interviews as well.
Despite more poker tournament success than any player in history, Bob Menery somehow thinks that Phil Hellmuth would not beat him in a best-of-5 heads-up match and they shook hands on it. It’s unclear what stakes they’ll be playing for, and I love Bob Menery, but he has to be out of his mind thinking he’ll beat Phil Hellmuth in a best-of-5 heads-up match:
Phil Hellmuth and Bob Menery On The ‘Fully Tilted’ Podcast
The full interview with Bob Menery and Phil Hellmuth went up a week or two ago. It’s well worth the 87 minutes because the conversation flows and you’ll learn a lot about poker and Phil Hellmuth along the way:
Interestingly, in the interview Phil Hellmuth alluded to a potential deal with PokerStars in the works. So that will be something to watch. Bob Menery also saying he’s slept with 20 women in the past 30 days seems, uh, unhealthy but all the power to him. Dude sounds like he’s living the dream following the split with Nelk Boys.
Phil LOVES pointing out that Tiger Woods has 16 Major Championships and he has 17 World Series of Poker bracelets. And I love how often Phil brings it up interviews. He told me about that a year or two back when I interviewed him for BroBible during one of his spectacular WSOP runs.
