Vin Diesel Tricked Everyone Into Thinking He’s In The ‘Avatar’ Sequels, Turns Out He’s Not

Sometime this week, Avatar: The Way of Water will become one of the few films to ever gross $2 billion or more at the global box office.

Given the film’s success, it’s easy to imagine why any actor would want to be a part of the franchise: those Avatar paychecks are probably as sweet as they come, especially for the top-billed talent.

What most actors won’t do, however, is seemingly trick fans into thinking he’d be in the Avatar sequels, which is exactly what Vin Diesel did a few years back.

Back in 2019, Diesel posted a video to Instagram of him and director James Cameron from the Avatar set and captioned the video: “And the journey continues… #Blessed #Grateful #Avatar”. This, obviously, seems to imply that he had some sort of involvement in the film — the official Avatar Wiki site created a page for him while websites such as IMDb and Wikipedia listed him as a cast member.

As it turns out, though, Diesel isn’t in The Way of Water and won’t be in any of the subsequent sequels either, according to producer Jon Landau, who actually commented on Vin’s phantom casting in a recent interview with Empire Magazine:

“Vin was a fan,” producer Jon Landau confirms when speaking with Empire. “He came in, visited the set one day to see what we were doing and people took that out of context.” It’s arguable that Diesel fanned the flames when it came to rumors he’d be going big and blue in the near future (“There is one person in Hollywood I’ve always wanted to work with and learn from, and so, all things come, I guess, to those that wait,” the actor rumbled in his Instagram video.) While Avatar: The Way of Water doesn’t feature Diesel, it does star Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Sigourney Weaver, Edie Falco, Kate Winslet, Jemaine Clement, Michelle Yeoh, Brendan Cowell, Cliff Curtis, Oona Chaplin, CJ Jones, and more. The film is currently playing in theaters and is set to be followed by Avatar: The Seed Bearer in 2024.
