When Deion Sanders flipped the nation’s top recruit in the class of 2022, Travis Hunter, from his alma mater Florida State to FCS Jackson State, it shook the college football world to its core.
So was Sanders then left for the head coaching job at Colorado, it was no surprise to see Hunter follow. Though the former five-star recruit from Georgia says it was no sure thing that he would follow Coach Prime to Boulder.
Unsurprisingly, Hunter had his pick of the litter when it came to new schools. While he ultimately ended up at Colorado, Charles Powers of On3 Sports listed the USC Trojans, Miami Hurricanes and Georgia Bulldogs as teams that were also in the hunt for Hunter.
As it turns out, at least one other school did everything within its power to try to land the superstar defensive back.
Travis Hunter Accuses Florida State Of Tampering Before He Entered The Transfer Portal
Prior to flipping from Florida State to Jackson State in a shock signing day move a year ago, Hunter had been committed to Mike Norvell and the Seminoles for eight months.
His decommitment still seems to sit poorly with some Tallahassee. Even 2023 five-star recruit Hykeem Williams went back and forth with Hunter on Twitter over the move.
But that doesn’t mean the Seminoles don’t still want Hunter back.
According to Hunter, FSU reached out to him about transferring into the program prior to him even entering the transfer portal.

That is, of course, illegal under the current NCAA rules. But with the NCAA’s lack of enforcement, it’s also something that almost every team in the country does.
Call it backchannelling. Call it what you will. But it’s clear that FSU did everything in its power to get back in the game with Hunter. Fortunately for Sanders and Colorado, it made no difference.
