Former NCAA Coach Suggests Option To Venmo Players NIL Money During Games After Key Plays

An NFL and NCAA football rest next to a stack of cash on the field.

NIL has overtaken college football, having a major impact on recruitment, roster management, and on-field play. One former Division I coach is suggesting a new way to get money to athletes.

The avenue would be direct, coming straight from the fans in the stands.

Name, image, and likeness deals typically involve a collective affiliated with each school which helps negotiate terms with, often, local businesses.

But what if there was a way to pay a player directly, in real time, for their play on the field?

Get a sack, get a Venmo. Touchdown catch? Here’s a quick payment.

That’s what Bill Busch is suggesting.

The former Nebraska defensive coordinator who also coached at LSU, Wisconsin, Utah, and Rutgers had the following to say on his 93.7 The Ticket radio show.

“Make it fair, and make it fun… Here’s how it works. Make a play, get paid,” he said of his Big Screen Bonus Bucks suggestion.

Essentially, when a player makes a key play during a game, said player’s Venmo, Cash App, or other payment sharing account flashes across the jumbotron.

Now, there would likely be some NCAA hurdles to cross, but it’s grabbed the attention of college football fans.

Here’s the initial online response.

“What an interesting concept in NIL.”

“Love it. Let the free market reign.”

Of course, not all were sold.

“This is a phenomenal way for fans to donate money after a huge play, but can they then immediately request money from said player when they make a mistake?”

There actually appear to be a few companies that are attempting to do this, like My NIL Pay and Duffle.

We’ll see if the idea continues to gain traction.
