Last week, the Chiefs headed back to the White House to celebrate their latest Super Bowl victory during a visit where Joe Biden invited Travis Kelce to step up to the podium he crashed during last year’s ceremony. The tight end cut things short after joking about being tased by the Secret Service, but it turns out he wasn’t actually messing around.
In 2023, the Kansas City Chiefs were invited to the White House for the first time after beating the Eagles in the Super Bowl (the tradition hadn’t begun when the franchise won its first Lombardi Trophy in 1970, and there was no visit in the wake of their win in 2020 due to the pandemic).
During the ceremony, Travis Kelce let his intrusive thoughts win when he stepped up to the podium bearing the presidential seal during a lull in the action and managed to utter a few words into the microphones before Patrick Mahomes quickly stepped in to whisk him away.
When the team returned to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue last Friday, he was officially permitted to address the nation courtesy of Joe Biden, but he cut his remarks short while noting “They told me if I came up here I’d get tased.”
It seemed like Kelce was joking around, but during the most recent episode of the New Heights show, he asserted he was very serious while recounting the conversation he had with a few members of the Secret Service after making his grand return to the White House.
Kelce—who said he’d also caught some heat last year for showing up with an expired ID—recounted the experience at the 31:45 mark of the episode, saying:
“That’s real. The Secret Service that’s all over the White House, they weren’t too happy with me on my second time visiting…
When I walked in, we had about four or five Secret Service members come up to me and tell me, ‘You know if you go up to that podium we’re authorized to taze you. It is actually an order for us to taze you.’
That’s all that was going through my head. I had no idea that President Biden was going to ask me to come up and let me have my moment…I felt Taser aimed at me when I was up there the whole time.”
I’d be lying if I said part of me doesn’t wish we’d been treated to a clip of Travis Kelce getting tased at the White House, but the Secret Service probably made the right decision by showing some restraint.
