College Football Lock Of The Week: Tulsa vs. Oklahoma State

Unfortunately, we started college football picks season with an L last week after taking Appalachian State -16.5 over Charlotte. Playing in a nasty storm, App State didn’t cover only to win the game 35-20 in a sloppy contest. That’s in the rearview now, though, we move forward.

This week we’re circling an in-state matchup featuring a sleeper pick to win the Big 12, Oklahoma State, and a sleeper that could contend in the American, Tulsa.

Kick-Off: 12:00 PM EST, ESPN

The Pick: Tulsa +23.5

This is the season opener for both the Cowboys and Golden Hurricane, but I think this game could be very similar to what we saw between these two teams last season when Oklahoma State earned a 40-21 win in Tulsa.

Oklahoma State could very well end up being the second-best team in the Big 12 this season behind Oklahoma thanks to Heisman hopeful Chubba Hubbard. Hubbard had a monster day against Tulsa a year ago with 257 rushing yards and three touchdowns and will surely get his on Saturday as well, but this isn’t some slouch Tulsa team that’s just going to fold over.

Tulsa has an offense that should be able to score enough to keep this one relatively close, surely within 23 points, thanks to quarterback Zach Smith and the weapons around him. The now-senior QB had an okay outing against the Pokes last season with 228 passing yards, a touchdown, and zero interceptions. He’ll be relying on running back Shamari Brooks like he did a season ago to help balance things out. Brooks rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns on 29 touches in this game last season. Wide receiver Keylon Stokes is one of the most overlooked wideouts in the country and is a big play waiting to happen, too.

With this being the first game of the season for both sides, it’s safe to assume both teams will get off to a bit of a sluggish start, which plays to the favor of a team catching 23.5 points as Tulsa is. The Golden Hurricane won’t pull off the upset, but they’ll do enough to keep it within three touchdowns.
