Barrell Bourbon Batch #27

I recently got my hands on these exquisite bottles of Barrell Bourbon, their most recent Barrell Bourbon Batch #27 and the Barrell Dovetail. I’ll cover the Dovetail at some point next week but today I wanted to discuss how spectacular the Barrell Bourbon Batch #27 is. This is a blended cask strength bourbon that’s listed at 5-years-old but the oldest bourbon in the blend is 15-years-od. It clocks in at 115.7 proof but has the smoothness of a bourbon 10 to 15 points below that number. The bourbons in this blend come from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Indiana and it has a suggested retail price of $88. You can look for it here on Drizly or on the Barrell Bourbon website.
Batch #27 comes from 5, 6, 8, 9, 13, and 15-year-old barrels. The 5-year-old barrel is a spice-heavy bourbon from Tennesse, the 6-year-old is a fruit-laden barrel from Indiana. The 9-year-old is a high rye addition for spice and the 13 and 15-year-old barrels pack in strong wood depth. The other 5 and the 8-year-old wheated bourbon barrel brings in a new level of complexity by smoothing out the blend. It has strong notes of coffee, pie, red fruit, apricot, grapes, and more on the nose. The palate is syrupy rich with hints of cherry and caramel. The finish is where you’ll find some of the oak and baking spices. This is a bourbon that I’d happily pay 1.5 to 2x the sticker tag for because it’s that good and one that could be a perfect Father’s Day gift this year.

It might not seem like it yet, but the weather is on the verge of turning and trail running season is nearly upon us. I recently picked these up and as someone with wide feet these are a godsend. They’re built wider than most to give you feet to move and the responsive Altra EGO
foam midsole has more cushioning than I could’ve ever imagined. Seriously, I almost felt like my foot was sinking down a fraction of an inch when I first started jogging in them but my feet feel better than ever.

Gear For Enjoying Life More Each Day
First up today is the Blue Run 13-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey [$169] which I just sampled last weekend and it is truly divine. This 13-year-old bourbon is the brainchild of Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Famer and former Four Roses master distiller Jim Rutledge who teamed up with Facebook’s first director-level employee and a Nike veteran to combine bourbon expertise with impeccable design.
I’ll be 100% honest, given the names attached I slightly expected this to not blow me away but this Blue Run 13-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is one of the best bourbons I’ve sampled in the past calendar year. It was almost as if I was holding back from taking sips because I wanted it to last forever. This 113-proof bourbon carries notes of vanilla and roasted nuts and has a smooth palate of dried fruit, brown butter, and intense baking spices. What struck me the most about this is how the high 113-proof was as smooth as a bourbon that’s 90-95 proof. It didn’t viciously attack my tastebuds like some barrel proof bourbons and instead was a truly enjoyable tasting experience from start to finish. So go check it out!
