Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has found himself at the center of controversy courtesy of the divisive commencement speech he delivered at a college over the weekend, and officials representing Kansas City apologize after the municipality’s official Twitter account posted a pretty odd message about the matter on Wednesday night.
On Saturday, Harrison Butker got the chance to address the graduating class at Benedictine College, a Catholic school located around an hour northwest of the city that the Kansas City Chiefs call home.
If you weren’t familiar with the political beliefs of the man who’s served as the kicker for the Chiefs since 2017, that likely changed after his remarks went viral, as the conservative Butker ruffled plenty of feathers while criticizing Pride Month, taking aim at Joe Biden over his views on abortion, and implying women should prioritize caring for a family over pursuing a career.
Butker subsequently found himself subjected to a deluge of backlash from people who possess a different worldview—including the approximately 100,000 critics who’ve signed a petition as of this writing urging the Chiefs to cut him (an NFL spokesperson has responded with a statement that reads, in part, “His views are not those of the NFL as an organization”).
On Wednesday, the official Twitter account for Kansas City entered the fray with a fairly perplexing message that noted Butker didn’t reside within the city limits while referencing the specific suburb where he lives before it was quickly deleted (while you don’t have to look too hard to find the tweet in question or real estate articles about his home, I’m going to refrain from specifying the town in question).
It didn’t take long for the account to issue an apology, and Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas
We apologies for our previous tweet. It was shared in error.

Butker, on the other hand, has not chimed in on the matter since delivering the speech that sparked the firestorm.
