There’s always a chance the hunter will become the hunted in situations involving dangerous animals, and a man in British Columbia learned that lesson the hard way thanks to a grizzly bear that attacked him while he was attempting to track down a black bear.
The beginning of April marks the start of a three-month open season on black bears in British Columbia, a province where upwards of 160,000 members of that particular species roam the wild.
That population is approximately ten times larger than the number of grizzly bears that call that territory home (which has slowly grown since a ban on hunting the species was instituted in 2017).According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, a 36-year-old man was hoping to bag a black bear in Elkford (a fairly isolated mountain town located near the border of Alberta) on May 16th with the help of his father and the team of dogs they were using to track it.
However, things took an unfortunate turn when the hunt was derailed by a grizzly bear that also decided to do some hunting before attacking the man, who was able to shoot at it with his gun before it fled the area. He was severely injured after being left with “broken bones and lacerations” due to what transpired during the counter and was ultimately transported to a hospital in Calgary via helicopter in stable condition.
Officials subsequently launched a search for the grizzly responsible for the attack and eventually discovered its carcass in the area before determining it had passed away from the bullet wounds it suffered while the hunter was fighting it off.
Grizzly bears were responsible for 104 attacks on humans in British Columbia between 2010 and 2021, although it appears the most recent fatality credited to the species occurred in 2005. Black bears only account for 66 attacks during the same span (the most recent fatality transpired in 2015), but they have historically been the more culpable species when it comes to humans who’ve been killed.
