Quinn Ewers is a big enough star to be on the cover of EA Sports’ new college football video game, but can he lead the Longhorns to the promised land? We’re going to find out this fall.
A trio of anonymous Big 12 coaches are not so sure that the former No. 1 overall recruit can get it done.
Ewers, who began his career at Ohio State, landed back home in Texas prior to the 2022 season and immediately took over as the starting quarterback for Steve Sarkisian.
He went 6-4 that year after suffering an AC joint injury that kept him out of two games. Now, on the heels of his first full season in which the Longhorns went 10-2 and won a conference championship, there are high expectations for Ewers to not only reach the new 12-team College Football Playoff, but compete for a national title. It certainly feels like national championship or bust in Austin.
As the quarterback, Quinn Ewers is obviously the primary catalyst for success. Arch Manning is breathing down his neck. He will be expected to exceed last year’s win total en route to the CFP Final in Atlanta.
With the seasons still a few months away, it is “talking season.”
Three Big 12 coaches spoke with Bruce Feldman of The Athletic about Ewers on the condition of anonymity. While they didn’t flat-out call him bad, they were not particularly kind.
One defensive backs coach who faced Texas last season is “not that high” on Ewers.
Overhyped. He has a good arm, and he did have a lot of talent around him, but you just see a bunch of stuff where you wonder what he’s doing out there.

A veteran Big 12 assistant also alluded to the second half of that view.
I think he’s still just trying to figure things out. Sark does such a good job of setting things up for him, and so you’ll see times where he’ll rip it, but then there are other times, he just seems to be a little timid.

Another Big 12 assistant pointed to the same inconsistencies and wonders if Ewers will be able to succeed without this year’s roster.
I’m very curious to watch him this year. The last two years he had superstars around him. There’s some ‘Oh My God!’ throws on film that he made against Alabama, but he was just so inconsistent. I think he’s about average athletically.

One Big 12 defensive coordinator also chimed in.
I do think he’s come a long way from 2022. There was too much of the Mahomes comparisons around him coming into college. He does have a good arm, but he’s not anywhere near as athletic nor the playmaker Mahomes is, or has that kind of presence. It’s kind of a strange deal because people want to talk about that, about what he was supposed to be, or they want to talk about Arch Manning behind him. But that isn’t the kid’s fault.

We’ll see who’s right!
