The Detroit Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates kicked off a doubleheader on Wednesday after having a Tuesday night meeting cancelled due to rain. Eager to get the action rolling, first pitch was thrown just before 1 PM ET as an intense lightning storm passed over the stadium.
Having already seen one delay due to inclement weather, the MLB had no intentions of letting nature win again!
Though fans were asked to leave their seats and take shelter under the Comerica Park concourse, players remained on the field and the contest continued without pause.

The decision to remove spectators from their seats while keeping play rolling provided an eerie scene from the stadium’s broadcast booth. Pirates beat writer Noah Hiles provided his view via social media.
Pirates, Tigers play during lightning storm.
3-0 Tigers as we head to the second. Fans are still not allowed to watch from the stands. Not sure I’ve seen anything like this. pic.twitter.com/5USAscnjdV

Many were befuddled by the move, posting responses in the comments section.
“They told fans to leave but kept players and umpires on the field… What?”
Like we said, nothing was stopping the league from getting this double header in – and on time, for that matter!
After a few innings, a message flashed across the Detroit Tigers scoreboard allowing fans to re-enter their seats.
Sticking with the theme, the home team got off to a lightning-fast start against Pirates pitcher Jared Jones. Detroit plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning before adding a four-spot in the bottom of the fifth frame to blow the game wide open.
With a win, the Tigers can get back to .500 on the season while starting this doubleheader off with a bang.
