Six months ago, the overwhelming majority of the college basketball world had no idea who Robbie Avila even was.
Now, Avila is one of the biggest stars in the entire sport thanks to his unique look and big-time play.
The sophomore averaged 17.4 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game for Indiana State this past season, and has decided to throw his name into the NCAA transfer portal.

Avila, a first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection this past season, is sure to be one of the portal’s most-coveted assets.
But one team may already have a leg up on the competition.
Indiana State head coach Josh Schertz is reportedly in line to become the new head honcho at Saint Louis. Matt Norlander of CBS Sports
So is Avila set to follow Schertz out the door? It’s certainly a possibility.
But the big man is a star for more than just his play. His trademark goggles made him a star off the court as well, with nicknames such as Cream Abdul-Jabbar and Larry Blurred.
“Originally, I started played football when I was younger, and I couldn’t wear glasses. They would’ve broken instantly. So, my mom invested in a pair of goggles, and I kind of started wearing them ever since,” Avila said of his look. “In high school, I thought about going to contacts. I tried them out real quick, but I couldn’t really get it down. Then, my brother came to me and was like, ‘Hey, you’re not you without your goggles. You can’t get contacts.’”
Add in the fact that Avila had two years of eligibility remaining and he shot nearly 40 percent from beyond the arc on almost four attempts per game at 6’10, 240 pounds and it’s hard to imagine a world where the NIL offers don’t come rolling in.
