It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia released its 16th season last summer, and according to series star Danny DeVito, filming for Season 17 is set to begin in September.
Speaking to Deadline at a recent event for Chris Pine’s film Poolman (in which he has a role), DeVito — while revealing that It’s Always Sunny will get “going again” in September — hilariously joked (?
) that the famously raunchy series has been “too tame” across its first 16 seasons.“We’ve been very tame over the years, so now we can really pull out the stops, you know?” DeVito told Deadline. “Now we can ruffle a few feathers, rattle a few cages, you know, shoot some fireworks.”

Following its 15th season in 2021, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia became the longest-running live-action American sitcom on cable TV.
DeVito, who joined the cast of the beloved comedy in its second season, stars alongside Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney, and Kaitlin Olson.
While the series is currently renewed through its 18th season, the cast has shown no signs of wanting to move on from the show.
Despite the fact that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is widely considered to be one of the greatest TV comedies ever made, the series has never been nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series at the Primetime Emmy Awards.
In addition to Poolman, DeVito also starred in the Disney film Haunted Mansion in 2023. He also appeared alongside his former Twins co-star Arnold Schwarzenegger at the Academy Awards for a clever crack about their shared history as Batman villains.
