The Golf Channel’s Johnson Wagner has had an interesting career going from a collegiate golf star with Virginia Tech to a part-time caddie to a professional golfer with 7 wins including 3 on the PGA Tour. He also was my favorite subplot of the PGA Championship at Valhalla.
Lost in the shuffle of Xander Schauffele finally breaking through and winning his first major championship, Bryson DeChambeau winning over millions of new fans, and Scottie Scheffler’s rollercoaster week was the Golf Channel’s Johnson Wagner producing comedy gold on the course.
During the PGA Championship at Valhalla, the Golf Channel sent Johnson Wagner out onto the course to various holes to hit difficult shots or recreate iconic shots like Xander’s second on 18 with his feet in the bunker. It was a cool feature from the Golf Channel but it was the segment at the 15th hole where Xander Schauffele had recorded a double bogey and Sahith Theegala chipped in that led to hilarious content. Johnson Wagner was struggling with the control and appeared to have the yips:
Smylie Kaufman (and many, many others) had jokes:
Dear @johnson_wagner,
Doesn’t matter where it goes… this content is the best whether you pull it off or not! Thanks for putting the hard helmet on every evening for us!
Love,

Wagner also struggled on the 18th hole with the Xander Schauffele shot where his feet were in the bunker and the ball was sitting in the short rough between the fairway and the bunker:
It was really only in a segment at the 13th hole where Johnson Wagner showed up with some good shots and even then he skulled one over the green and had to tell his boothmates to watch out for a flying golf ball:
For the US Open and the Open Championship, I would absolutely LOVE to see a segment where the Golf Channel (or ESPN) pull regular Joes out of the crowd to try and hit these shots. If 3-time PGA Tour winner Johnson Wagner is struggling we need to see what a weekend warrior looks like attempting these shots.
