More Legal Troubles Surface For Embattled Chiefs Wide Receiver Rashee Rice

Ever since the Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LVIII back in February, it’s been downhill for Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice. The breakout rookie has found himself in legal trouble on numerous occasions.

That continued on Friday, as reports surfaced of an alleged incident that occurred before the 2023 NFL Draft.

Here’s Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio with more.

There are certain objective facts, however, that teams became aware of — and that did not come to light publicly before the draft. Those facts could impact the manner in which his current entanglements are handled by the NFL.

Per multiple sources, multiple teams learned during the pre-draft process about an alleged incident involving Rice while he was at SMU. Rice believed former SMU basketball player Kendric Davis was seeing Rice’s girlfriend. Rice and some of his friends, per the specific information gathered by at least one team, went to an SMU basketball game. Rice (or someone with him), per the specific information gathered by at least one team, fired multiple bullets into the empty car belonging to Kendric Davis.

Multiple sources expressed a belief that every team was aware of the incident before the draft, including the Chiefs. Kansas City drafted Rice in round two. He was the fifty-fifth overall selection.

In March,  Rashee Rice was one of two drivers involved in a street-racing crash involving luxury cars that caused multiple injuries unrelated to the street-racing in the Dallas area. He faces up to eight felony charges relating to the incident, during which he was allegedly driving 119pmh.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Rice was under investigation for allegedly hitting a photographer at a Dallas-area club on Monday.

As you can see, issues are starting to pile up for Rashee Rice. It’s one thing for the NFL to give a lax punishment to someone whose arrest seemed out of character. But, these are three incidents that allege that Rice has a propensity for breaking the law. That’s something that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is going to struggle to properly ignore.

At this point, it seems as if the Chiefs should prepare to be without Rashee Rice for an extended period of time in the 2024 season. They needed to add weapons at wide receiver this offseason anyways, and they’ve done that. They signed Hollywood Brown and used a first-round pick on Texas speedster Xavier Worthy. But, they may need to look to make another move to help cover for a likely suspension of Rashee Rice.

In his rookie season, Rice had 938 yards and 7 touchdowns in the regular season, and another 262 yards and a touchdown in the postseason.
