New Jersey High School Considering Legal Action After Insane Botched Call Costs Them Shot At State Title

Manasquan High School in New Jersey should be preparing for a NJSIAA Group 2 boys basketball state championship game.

Instead, its season is over…probably.

Superintendent Dr. Frank Kasyan told Stephen Edelson of The Asbury Park Press that the school could pursue “an injunction from the court to stop the games until our protest is heard.

The comments come on the back of Manasquan’s 46-45 loss to Camden in the state semifinal. The Warriors appeared to hit a game-winning shot as time expired. But after referees initially ruled the shot good, they then went back and claimed that time had expired before the shot left the hand of the shooter.

As the video above shows, however, the ball was out of the Manasquan’s player hand well before the clock had expired.

“I don’t know what can happen, that is why I turned it over to Michael Gross, our school board attorney,” Kasyan said of the situation. “…A lot of time what happens is you’ll protest, it drags on and then it becomes a moot point. So the game is Saturday. This has to happen quickly and he’s on it.”

Camden is currently set to play Arts High School in the Group 2 championship game Saturday at noon.

“I just want to see a just and ethical decision being made by the NJSIAA and that is what those officials are there for,” Kasyan said. “This is something different. There is physical evidence that shows the game wasn’t over and the ball went through, so there you have it.”

The NJSIAA has since apologized and admitted the mistake. But it said that nothing could be done to change the result.

“Unlike in college or the pros, there is no instant replay review in high school basketball in New Jersey. These are the rules of the game that all schools agree to follow, and which have been upheld on appeal. We apologize to the Manasquan team for the error,” the statement read.

New Jersey courts, however, could determine otherwise.
