LSU Softball Coach Says Her Team Is Too Good To Be Travelling Cross-Country For Super Regionals

The SEC is undoubtedly the top college softball conference in America. The numbers don’t lie when it comes to the topic as the league led the way with 13 NCAA Tournament bids, including eight of the 16 regional site hosts.

LSU was one of those No. 1 teams, landing the ninth national seed which allowed the Tigers to play their opening round in Baton Rouge.

Head coach Beth Torina says that seeding was still too low.

Feeling disrespected, Torina went on a minute-long rant about having to travel to Stanford for the Super Regionals. The Top 8 national seeds get the opportunity host the second postseason series, and the Tigers fell one rung too low on the totem pole.

Here’s what she had to say:

“I think our team’s resume was really strong. I’m not sure why we’re going to be going on the road… I think we did all of the things that we needed to do for this committee… It’s disappointing, a bit.”

Torina says that the team did all it needed to earn a Top 8 seed. Fans were quick to point out that that might not have been the case.

“Maybe try winning more games…?”

LSU finished just 12-12 in conference play, and while the uber-competitive league is undoubtedly difficult to navigate, there’s a reason the Tigers fell behind a number of their peers.

The Tigers lost six of their last seven SEC series, including a pair to Auburn and Ole Miss. Both of those squads finished in the bottom half of the league, with Ole Miss being dead last.

Despite the poor finish, LSU landed a Top 10 seed – which apparently isn’t good enough!

Interestingly enough, the school’s baseball coach had the same view of his team, who’s currently fighting for an invite to the NCAA Tournament field. Jay Johnson says he has a “Top 10-15” group in the country despite finishing 11th in the SEC.

Those in Baton Rouge clearly hold their squads in the highest regard – on-field results be damned!

Of course, there is one way for the Tigers to prove the committee wrong, and that’s by going cross-country to upend a higher seeded opponent in their home ballpark. We’ll soon see if Beth Torina was right after all.
