Based on the early reviews for Immaculate following its premiere at South by Southwest, it appears as though Sydney Sweeney’s hot streak is going to continue.
Following its premiere at the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, earlier this week, moviegoers who were lucky enough to be in attendance took to social media to share the reviews of the film, which apparently has an all-time great shocker of an ending.
“Immaculate might just be one of the best religious horror films in ages. It takes its time to build up to one of the craziest final acts I’ve ever seen carried by an excellent script, wonderful performances, and a beautifully haunting score,” said
“Sydney Sweeney’s punchy nunsploitation pregnancy horror has THE BALLSIEST ENDING of any mainstream horror you’ll see this year. I can’t believe they went there,”
“Immaculate is a slow, terrifying burn that transforms into a hell of a time! It’s gory and unhinged in all the right ways. That ending will have a lot of people talking FOR SURE,”
Immaculate will be Sweeney’s second movie of the year following Madame Web. She also recently starred alongside Glen Powell in the rom-com Anyone But You, which was released in late December 2023 and has grossed over $200 million at the global box office, leading to discussions of a sequel.
Sweeney is also making headlines away from the silver screen, as she recently hosted Saturday Night Live and also wore a dress to an Oscars afterparty that earned her comparisons to legendary Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe.
Here is the official synopsis for Immaculate, via Neon:
Directed by Michael Mohan, Immaculate follows Cecilia (Sweeney), a woman of devout faith who is offered a fulfilling new role at an illustrious Italian convent. Her warm welcome to the picture-perfect Italian countryside is soon interrupted as it becomes clearer to Cecilia that her new home harbors some dark and horrifying secrets.
Alongside Sweeney, who also produced the film, Immaculate stars Simona Tabasco, Alvaro Morte, Benedetta Porcaroli, Giorgio Colangeli, and Dora Romano. Check out the official trailer below.
