When the Philadelphia Eagles selected Jordan Davis with the thirteenth-overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, they thought they had selected the next star run-stuffing defensive tackle in the NFL. After all, Davis completely dominated at Georgia, garnering Heisman Trophy votes in 2021.
While Jordan Davis has been solid, he’s been far from the star player that pretty much everyone thought the Eagles were going to get.
Part of that, according to some, is because Davis let his weight get out of control and he lost some of his explosiveness.But, Jordan Davis is claiming that he’s entering the offseason ramp-up as a much leaner version of himself at 350lbs. Here’s Pro Football Talk with more.
Asked what kind of shape he’s in now compared to the past, Davis used the words “definitely improving” three times before describing himself as a “more lean” 350 pounds.
“One thing I’ve been focused on is just getting better. I said the same thing last year from my rookie year, I want to get better every year,” Davis said. “I’m stepping into a much larger role than I was last year, and I know what’s expected of me. In terms of being in my best shape, I’m getting in the best condition of my life.”
Davis said he has improved his diet and trying to be more active even on his days off, even if that just means taking walks or hikes. Davis acknowledged that 350 pounds is a lot of weight to carry around, but he says he’s wearing his weight better than he has in the past.
“It looks a lot better than last year,” Davis said.
Frankly, Jordan Davis is someone who should be dominating weekly. Considering the fact that he ran a 4.78 40-yard dash at the 2022 NFL Combine at 341 lbs and had a 10-foot-3-inch broad jump, he should be basically unblockable. Davis and former Georgia teammate Jalen Carter should, in theory, be the best defensive tackle duo in the league. Carter held up his end of the bargain in his rookie season last year. It’s time for Jordan Davis to do the same.
