Purdue Center Zach Edey dominated men’s college basketball the last two years at a level we haven’t seen in a long time. The two-time National Player of the Year was simply unstoppable in the paint.
But, serious questions remain on what kind of impact the 7-foot-4-inch big man will have in the NBA. Zach Edey struggled defending in space in college hoops, and everyone will be bigger and stronger than his opponents were in college.
To really carve out a role in the NBA, Edey is going to have to develop a semi-reliable stroke from three-point range. If he can hurt teams on the pick-and-pop, he’s got a chance to be a good player in the league when you consider the unique advantages he brings to the table.
On Monday, Edey had the chance to show off that three-point stroke at the 2024 NBA Draft Combine. He did just that, as she shot the ball really well.

Edey went a very respectable 14-25 from three-point range during the drill portion of the NBA Combine. And, he was one of the leaders in movement shooting, as well. That is going to get the scouts excited, for sure.
That wasn’t the only positive result for Zach Edey on Monday. His work in the movement drills far exceeded expectations, as well. He ran a very respectable 3.51 3/4 court sprint. When you consider that projected top-5 pick big man Alex Sarr ran a 3.44 and that Sarr is supposed to be a pretty good athlete, that’s a really great time for Edey. He record a 31.5 inch vertical leap, and performed well in the lateral movement drills for his size, as well .
ESPN has Edey going to the Miami Heat with the 15th-overall pick in a mock draft released on Sunday prior to the combine but after the NBA Draft Lottery won by the Hawks. Frankly, it’s not a great draft class, and I think that Edey could end up in the top-ten if his pre-draft process continues to go well.
Zach Edey averaged 25.2 points per game and 12.2 rebounds per game in the 2023-2024 season, leading Purdue all the way to the National Title game, where they lost to repeat champions UConn.
The 2024 NBA Draft is June 26-27 in Brooklyn.
