With the 225th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Charges selected Brenden Rice, wide receiver, USC.
Normally, that wouldn’t be news to anybody.
But Rice isn’t just any old wide receiver, he’s the son of the unanimously crowd greatest wide receiver to ever play the game, Jerry Rice. And Jerry isn’t happy about his son’s draft free fall.
“My dad was hot,” the younger Rice, 22, said recently. “You guys get the flash like … the humble dude, right? Me, he’s like, ‘Hell no, we’re going to take this to a different level. These guys going to feel us.'”
Rice began his college career at Colorado before transferring to USC where he spent two years as one of Caleb Williams’s favorite targets.
He racked up 84 receptions for 1,402 yards and 16 touchdowns, 12 of which came in a big-time senior season.
Most mock draft’s had him coming off the board early on Day 3 of the NFL Draft around fourth or fifth round. Instead, he fell to the seventh.
Even Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh said his team had a third- to fourth-round grade on Rice. Though one would then wonder why LA didn’t select Rice earlier.
Unfortunately, Rice’s draft day was a sad one for another reason.
He attended his best friend’s funeral earlier in the day before receiving a call from the Chargers while he was in a Dallas airport heading home to Los Angeles.
“It was just like a blessing from God because he allowed me to go ahead and just mourn the death of my friend,” Rice said, “and then after that just go ahead and be happy, and it was a glorious day.”
While Rice’s famous father was furious with his tumble, the young wideout isn’t letting it get to him.
“I’m in the best position possible to go ahead and make my mark on and make my own legacy,” he said. “I went from Caleb Williams to Justin Herbert, and I’m in a room that’s going to allow me to compete day in and day out.”
