Embarrassing Crowd For Big East Rivalry Shows How Far Georgetown Basketball Has Fallen

The Georgetown Hoyas are trending after seeing an embarrassing crowd show for a Big East basketball rivalry against St. John’s on Wednesday. A once proud program continues to fall and it’s seemingly lost all support from its fanbase.

The Hoyas were college basketball royalty in the 1980s and 90s, posting 18 straight NCAA Tournament appearances under John Thompson between the ’78 and ’97 seasons.

That included a national title in 1984 with a team led by Patrick Ewing, as well as a runner-up finish the following year.

Those days are a memory of the very distant past, though, with Georgetown struggling to find success on the basketball court of late.

Since the start of the 2021-22 campaign, the team is a combined 21-68, including an abysmal 3-51 mark in Big East play. Fans have apparently had enough.

The most recent setback came against conference rival St. John’s, and absolutely no one showed up to watch.

The scene just before tip was less than intimidating, and the arena wouldn’t fill in much after the game began.

The Hoyas wouldn’t do much to motivate the few onlookers in attendance, falling behind by 21 points midway through the first half of action.

Though they’d battle back to make the final score 90-85, Georgetown never led in the basketball game.

With the loss, GU fell to 8-18 in Ed Cooley’s debut season. They sit at 10th in the 11-team Big East standings at 1-14 in league play.
